Bangladesh wants safe, sustainable repatriation of Rohingyas: Shirin

Dhaka, Jun 2 (UNB) – Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury has said Bangladesh wants voluntary, safe, peaceful and sustainable repatriation of Rohingyas through bilateral discussions and with support of the international community. 

She said this while addressing an international conference on Rohingyas in Paris on Friday, said a Parliament Secretariat handout on Saturday.

The France-Bangladesh Friendship Group arranged the international conference on ‘Rohingya situation in Myanmar and Bangladesh’ at the National Assembly of France. Noted human rights activists, lawyers and lawmakers attended the conference.

Dr Shirin said Bangladesh has set a rare example of humanity by providing shelter to Rohingyas. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has opened a new era of humanity by opening the border to Rohingyas, she added.

Mentioning that Bangladesh is maintaining the bilateral negotiations with Myanmar over the repatriation of Rohingyas, Dr Shirin hoped that Myanmar will complete the process of safe and peaceful return of Rohingyas to their homeland.

The Speaker sought relentless support and vigilance from the international community in this regard.

President of France-Bangladesh Friendship Group Daniele Obono, MP, human rights activists Dr Maung Zarni, Razia Sultana and Tun Khin, lawyer Nay San Lwin and human rights researcher Prof CR Abrar spoke on the occasion. President of France-Gambia Friendship Group Jean Francois Mbaye presided over the function.
