Digital Security Act to be media-friendly: Law Minister

Dhaka, July 11 (UNB) – Law Minister Anisul Huq on Wednesday reiterated that the Digital Security Act will be “people and media-friendly”.

Speaking at his office after a discussion with journalist leaders, he said that no law will be enacted by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government, which may reduce the freedom of speech provided by Bangabandhu’s constitution.

He also added that the DSA may be passed in the next Parliamentary session.

Anisul said that the draft of the act is currently with the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, whom the journalist leaders had met with twice previously.

The leaders had made several proposals, which will be discussed by the committee and before being  finalised, he added, but the changes may need to be discussed with them one last time before being placing in the parliament.

The meeting was attended by the Editors' Council General Secretary and editor of the Daily Star Mahfuz Anam, president of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) Monjurul  Ahsan Bulbul and Association of Television Channel Owners (ATCO)’s senior vice-president and CEO of Ekattor TV Mozammel Babu, among others.
