Dhaka, June 14 (UNB) - Speakers at a press conference on Thursday demanded giving focus on climate-resilient infrastructure development for climate financing in the national budget for 2018-19 fiscal year.
They also called for ensuring adequate and additional new budget for climate resilient economy and building adaptive capacity of coastal people.
EquityBD, a civil society organisation, organised the press conference at the Jatiya Press Club in the city.
Moderated by M Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, Chief Moderator of EquityBD, the press conference was attended among others by Quamrul Islam Chowdhury, President of Federation of Environment Journalists Forum Bangladesh, Motahar Hossain, Secretary of Climate Change Journalist Forum, Mrinal Kanti of Bangladesh Indigenous People Network on Climate Change and Badrul Alam of Bangladesh Agriculture Federation. Key demand was read out by Syed Aminul Hoque of EquityBD.
The group made four recommendations for the 2018-19 new budget, including ensuring new and additional budget as climate finance out of traditional allocation, expediting preparation of National Adaptation Plan with mass participation and ensuring budget for required adaptation finance and ensuring transparency and accountability of climate finance.
Speaking at the press conference, Quamrul Islam said the proposed climate finance is inadequate to fight climate change impacts.
He recommended building National Implementing Entities to mobilise additional global finance.
