S Africa urges Myanmar to address Rohingya crisis

Dhaka, Sept 14 (UNB) - South Africa has expressed its deep concern about the plight of over three hundred thousand Rohingya civilians who have fled their homes in Myanmar.

The South African government says it supports the statement of the Secretary-General of the United Nations who emphasised the responsibility of the government of Myanmar to provide security to affected populations, and requested for humanitarian agencies to be granted access to affected communities in need of assistance and protection.

It urged all parties to halt the violence in order to avoid further human sufferings, according to Foreign Ministry here.

In particular, the South African government appealed to the government of Myanmar to address the current situation in Rakhine state within the ambit of the law, upholding the rights of all those living within its borders.

It is mindful of the manifold challenges confronting the government and the people of Myanmar and has full faith that the government of Myanmar will continue its process of democratisation and political reforms to deliver sustainable development, stability and to contribute to national reconciliation.
